PSA Teacher Carol Ferris on KATU News

PSA's Carol Ferris has been featured twice recently on KATU's AM Northwest morning show! "I think astrology is less about cause and more about nature and our natures. It's a language about time and place." Carol did a wonderful job at representing astrology!

Watch Carol give a reading to the hostess of the show, Helen.

Watch Carol talk about the differences in nature between months and relate them to the months in which we were born.

Congratulations Carol, you're Portland famous!

Pay What You Will Astrology

Teachers at Portland School of Astrology are trying on a fresh model of economics--the Pay What You Will system! Becoming increasingly popular, PWYW allows the public to pay for what they believe is the value of service. The benefit to folks is that the marvelous tool of astrology is able to reach a wider group of people who may not otherwise have access to the information and has less of a perceived risk to the service itself.

Teachers will be conducting 50 minute consultations on PWYW days. Book as soon as you can! Slots are expected to fill up fast! You can choose from the wonderful selection of astrologers:

Former Astro Empowerment Student Reflects on the 1st-Year Program

Oregon Astrological Association’s Scholarship made it possible for me complete the 1st Year Astro-Empowerment Program at Portland School of Astrology!

I first found Portland School of Astrology, by internet searching these three words: Portland - astrology - school. And there it was, an astrology school based right here in Portland! I was so excited I sent an email right away, asking for more information. PSA appeared for me exactly at the right time. I had been struggling with some health issues, and was recovering from surgery at the time. As a result, I had cut down on teaching yoga classes, in order to heal and take care of myself. This time away, led me to pursue my lifelong interest in Astrology. I had always tried to navigate the realm of Astrology on my own, reading a random assortment of books and listening to podcasts. But, I always felt rather lost and aimless on my own. So, the idea of an actual astrology school, designed to make sense out of this seemingly complex subject, was so completely cool. I was beside myself with excitement!

After speaking with Jaysen Paulsen at PSA, I immediately decided I wanted to enroll in the program. (Honestly, I may have decided before speaking with him. A Moon/Chiron stellium in Aries, makes for these sorts of quick decisions.) But, I still wasn’t able to work or teach much at all at this time, and my income was extremely limited as a result. Jaysen informed me about OAA’s scholarship for PSA’s 1st year program. I applied, crossed my fingers, set my intentions and it happened. I got the scholarship! This made it possible for me to start the program at that time, while I was healing. And as it turns out, it’s exactly what I needed.

As soon as the program began, the mystery of Astrology began to unfold and reveal itself to me. I experienced so many moments of connection, revelation and deep understanding. PSA brought all the details of this vast subject together into a cohesive, creative and structured program. Jaysen Paulsen, Rhea Wolf and Andrea Gehrz exceeded my wildest expectations at how amazing Astrology school could be! I immediately became inspired to share everything I was learning, and felt more confident about sharing astrology in my yoga and meditation classes. I was so inspired to share, I co-created a series of classes, with a fellow yoga teacher and Astrologer, Renee Sills. We call our series , Embodying The Zodiac, which is a once monthly class that combines astrology, movement, yoga, meditation, visualization and so much more. Each class is designed around the signs, and happens near the New Moon. As of this month, we have been teaching this series for a year now. Beginning with Aries and now ending with Pisces. We plan to continue the cycle.

During this time, I also became fascinated with Medical Astrology and Astrological Remediation, thanks to PSA and Andrea Gehrz. Andrea’s way of teaching us about the vibrations of the planets and how they affect us, led me to more of an understanding of how I work with energy, and my specific sensitivity to energy and vibrations. I felt a powerful calling to enroll in Eden Energy Medicine’s Foundation program, so as to learn how to work with energy specifically. I have recently begun taking the first steps to using Energy Medicine and Astrology together, as a form of Astrological Remediation.

Talk about Astro-Empowerment!

The OAA scholarship and PSA have given me the tools and knowledge necessary to go out into the world and share astrology with others. For this, I am infinitely grateful.

Oceans of Gratitude,

Melina N. Donalson  (Pisces Sun, Aries Moon, Scorpio Ascendant)

Jen Gouvea Memorial Scholarship + Library

While it's been a challenging time for PSA teachers and staff over the last 7 weeks, Jen has been hard on my heart; her heart-opening passion, her revolutionary ways, her insightful teachings. I've spent nights pouring over her old Astrology notes, Flower Essence books with personal flower doodles and listening to the recording of classes we did together and one thing became clear to me...Jen's vision and mission won't die.

With the help of PSA teachers, we are officially forming the Jen Gouvea Memorial Scholarship Fund and Library to preserve the ideals of our compassionate warrior friend. She had a mission to change the world and chose both Astrology and Flower Essences as her delivery method and this will not be forgotten.

With the donated monies, we will be rewarding local students the financial opportunity to create change within the community and the world through various grants. We want to honour those students who give selflessly to make a difference much like Jen did through her low-cost classes, low-cost consultations, therapy sessions, her genuine friendship and simply holding space for those in need.

Look for future scholarship announcements from PSA. Our initial thoughts are to grant for the upcoming Queer Astrology Conference and potentially a scholarship for our 2nd-Year Program. We will also be collecting new and gently used astrology books for a future library. Let JayP know if you would like to make a donation of old books.

PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING A CONTRIBUTION in time for the holiday season.

With much love and blessings,
Jaysen Paulson, PSA Director

In Memory of Jen Gouvea 1976-2014

We are very sad to report that PSA Teacher Jen Gouvea passed away this weekend.

She was a great visionary, profound healer, revolutionary astrologer and a big-hearted soul. Jen was also a unwavering community organizer for the Portland astrological community as well as the healing community. She was instrumental in the founding of PSA and it's continued support throughout it's first and second year. She was also a teacher of Flower Essence Therapy and Astrology to many  groups, bringing transformational experiences in people's everyday life.

She was a fighter for change.
She was a champion for truth.
She was an announcer of authenticity.

...but in the most gentle of ways.

She will be missed by the groups that she was involved with; spiritual circles, writing groups, women's groups, breath-work circles, astrology groups, healing circles and flower essence circles, and many other individuals that she came in contact with plus the countless people she touched in personal consultations.

The Oregon Astrological Association will be holding a public memorial for Jen this Friday November 14th at 7pm, 3185 NE Regents Dr at Subud Center. All in the Astrology community are welcome to attend; students, teachers, friends and colleagues.

Jen Gouvea will be greatly missed by all.

New School Location

A couple of days after ZEDTalks, Rhea Wolf and Jaysen Paulson went to view a new school space and fell in love with a Hollywood location that will soon be the new space for the Portland School of Astrology. We are excited to finally have a space that is 100% PSA owned and to have a proper container for the school to grow, foster community and encourage astrological learning and loving.

We will move classes into the new space in the coming terms this school year. We will still hold some classes at Urania and the Alberta space in the future so please check the information of each class.

The new location is equipped with a cozy environment, a front desk receptionist and a French bakery across the street! Located in the Hollywood Professional Building at 3939 NE Hancock St #212.

We could not have done this without your help and support! Thank you for continuing to believe in the vision of the Portland School of Astrology!

PQ Monthly on PSA + Queer Astrology

Rhea Wolf teaches on Queer Astrology topics at PSA

Rhea Wolf teaches on Queer Astrology topics at PSA

PQ Monthly writer TJ Acena recently wrote on Rhea Wolf, Queer Astrology and the Portland School of Astrology.

"For many of us in the queer community, we may have read certain astrology books and felt confused or rejected by the language used. Certainly many women have been translating texts for our whole lives when the pronoun “he” is used to mean both men and all human beings. And consider being someone who engages in non-heteronormative relationships – that is, relationships that are not necessarily two people in a heterosexual, conventionally gender-defined relationship. For them, the translations of astrological texts or a reading session might be too overwhelming to even attempt."-Rhea Wolf

Letter from the Director

What a year we had!

Portland School of Astrology recently closed out the first school year as we begin the second this Fall. I was very pleased and also deeply moved by the amount of students that came to support us this past year through attending classes, volunteering and generous donations. As I reflect back to the previous school year I was satisfied with our diversity of programming, our approach to grassroots marketing and the teachers at PSA who stepped up to really make the school into an institution of integrity. Personally I learned of the importance of marketing and fundraising to keep the school afloat and the danger of competing priorities.

Here is a short list of accomplishments:

  • 12 1st-Year Student go through as our first cohort.
  • 566 students went through our Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer quarter classes.
  • We gave away $2,108 in Work Trade exchange.
  • Between Symposium Astrologica and Renaissance Medicine conference we had 100 people in attendance!
  • Grassroots marketing including flyer distribution, word of mouth and tabling at Portland Plant Medicine, Merry Meet and marching in NW Pride Parade. Thank you volunteers!

As we look forward to the future this school year, I am committing myself to the following challenges: a commitment to even more diversified programming, finding a new space to call home, adding a sliding scale to the website to give students with lower means a chance to participate in classes and a commitment to financial stability that includes marketing, fundraising and events that interest the community.

Here is a list of things we are doing or working on for the 2014-2015 school year:

  • we added Carol Ferris to our adjunct faculty, an astrologer with over 40 years consulting experience and former Professor for National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) and Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM).
  • Adding more events: ZEDTalks in the Fall, Medical Astrology conference in Winter Term, Symposium Astrologica Teaching Conference with the OAA in March and a Mini-Reading fair in the Spring.
  • Adding more fundraising: ZEDTalks, Culinary Cosmos dinner, Plants & Planets Water Temple Retreat.
  • We've formed a partnership with The People's Yoga and their Embodiment Astrology series. We have a different PSA teacher each week in order to branch out and share this information.
  • Conducting the 1st-Year Program during the school year now and moving forward.
  • sliding scale added on all classes to increase access and ease of class information on all class descriptions.
  • simplified website and more online programming than the previous year.

Thank you again for supporting PSA. I gladly put my heart and soul into this year and appreciate your receptivity, generosity and hunger for knowledge!

Much love,

Jaysen Paulson
