Class Difficulty Level
Are you a beginner astrologer? Or more advanced? Test your knowledge of astrology with our official scale!
All classes open to the public have a difficulty level listed for each class. This is meant to help astrologers with differing experience levels navigate which classes are best for them at the Portland School of Astrology.
Level 1: Novice
For the student who knows little-to-nothing about astrology
This student may not have seen a natal chart before and doesn’t know what houses, planets, signs, or aspects are. This student’s knowledge may range from ‘never attended an astrology class’ to knowing a little bit from social media memes, apps they love, or picking up bits from personal contacts who know more about astrology. This student has very little, or no serious study.
Level 2: Beginner
For the student with some study in the past
This student might be interested in further study of astrology for fun, or have hopes to develop a practice. The beginner might know a little something about houses, planets, signs, aspects, and techniques or branches of astrological practice. The beginner typically struggles with synthesis and delineation (putting the pieces together), and has little-to-no knowledge of differing branches of practice, ethics, philosophy, and celestial mechanics.
Level 3: Intermediate
For the student who is critically-engaged in astrology
This student might have had a few-to-several years of study and likely has a strong grasp on basics like houses, planets, signs, and aspects. This student is mostly at ease with synthesis and delineation and might employ techniques or subscribe to a particular branch of astrological practice. The intermediate might have some sense of ethics, philosophy, and celestial mechanics. This student should be able to conduct a consultation, whether or not they are comfortable with the process completely.
Almost all classes and events at PSA are open for the intermediate. A small number per year are only for intermediate students, typically practitioner-level topics, or technique workshops where a strong grasp on basics are needed. 1st-Year Program or 2nd-Year Program is acceptable for the intermediate level.
Level 4: Advanced
For the student at a practitioner level of skill
This student has years of study and practice and a strong knowledge of houses, planets, signs, and aspects. This student may be involved in the astrology community and employ their skill-set in some way. This student is critically-minded and has a strong sense of philosophy, celestial mechanics, practitioner ethics. This student is comfortable with synthesis and delineation and might employ techniques or subscribe to a particular branch of astrological practice. This student is able to conduct a consultation with ease.
All classes and events at PSA are open for the advanced. A small number per year are only for advanced students, typically practitioner-level topics, or technique workshops. 2nd-Year Program is acceptable for the advanced level.
